| RAILWAY TRANSPORT |
The first railway in Yunnan, the Kunming-Viet NamRailway, dates backto 1910. Since the 1960s, many railways have been constructed in succession,including Guiyang-Kunming Railway, Chengdu-Kunming Railway, Nanning-Kunming Railway,Kunming-Yuxi Railway, Neijiang-Kunming Railway,and Guangtong-Dali Railway. At present, preliminary surveys and studies are under way for the proposed Pan-Asian Railway connecting Yunnan with Southeast Asian countries |

| RIVER TRANSPORT |
Yunnan has six major water systems consisting of the Jinsha (Golden Sand) River, the Lancang River, the Yuan River, the Nanpang River, the Nu River, and the Irrawaddy River as well as 30 odd lakes of various sizes. A total of 8,000 kilometers of waterways can be used for river transport purpose. At present, along the Jinsha River and the Lancang River, the length ofintra-province waterways in operation approximates 1,500 kilometers. Major ports include Shuifu,Suijiang, Jinghong, Simao, and Dali. The well-known Lancang-Mekong River is the only international rivern Asia flowing through 6 countries. In June of 2001, sommercial shipping service among China, Laos,Myanmar, and Thailand on the Lancang-Mekong River was offici ally inaugurated. |
